Medical Conditions That May Be Treated With Botox Injections

Posted on

Botox has been used as a treatment to make the face look younger for many years. It is injected into fine lines and wrinkles and fills them in and makes them less noticeable almost instantly. While this is the most popular reason for getting Botox injections, there are other ways the injections are used for medical reasons as well. These are some of the medical conditions Botox injections are often used to treat.

Muscle Conditions

Botox injections are sometimes used to treat certain muscle conditions of the body. One of these conditions is known as cervical dystonia. When a patient has cervical dystonia, the muscles of the neck contract involuntarily and this causes the head to turn quickly into an uncomfortable position which causes pain. For those who have severe cases of cervical dystonia, this occurs frequently and the pain can be quite unbearable. By injecting Botox into the neck, the nerve signals are blocked, which stops the uncontrollable movement of the muscles from occurring.

Neurological Conditions

Certain neurological conditions can also be treated with Botox injections. For instance, those who suffer from cerebral palsy commonly have trouble with their limbs involuntarily pulling in or being "drawn" in towards the middle of their bodies. Botox injections are often given to help relax the muscles so that the limbs are no longer stiff and can be moved back into their proper positions.

Bladder Conditions

Those who suffer from having an overactive bladder may also benefit by having Botox injections. The injections are given in the lower abdominal area which helps stop muscle spasms from occurring in this area. This prevents urinary incontinence because the bladder no longer needs to be emptied as frequently.

Eye Conditions

Botox injections are also used to treat patients who suffer from conditions of the eyes as well. It is often used to treat those who have what is known as a lazy eye. In this condition, the muscles that control the position of the eyes are unbalanced. The eye specialist may reposition the eyes properly and then inject Botox into the muscles to help prevent them from becoming unbalanced again. Botox is also used to treat those who have involuntary twitching in the eye. When injected into the eye muscles, the twitching not longer occurs.

Although Botox injections are commonly used to help patients look and maybe even feel a bit younger, it also has medical benefits that can make substantial differences in the quality of life a patient has. Reach out to a professional for more information about Botox injections.
